Nepal Urgently Needs Our Help                                                              

The full scale of this disaster is still emerging. Hundreds of people, including local residents and foreign visitors, have been reported missing or remain unaccounted for, and the number of casualties is expected to rise as rescue teams reach isolated communities.

Entire settlements have been inundated, transportation routes have been severed, and hospitals, schools and essential services throughout the affected region are under enormous pressure.

Initial assessments suggest that a massive rock-and-ice avalanche blocked the Lhende River near the Nepal–Tibet border, creating a sudden release of water downstream. Authorities are also investigating whether a glacial lake outburst contributed to the disaster. Whatever the ultimate cause, the destruction on the ground is extraordinary.

Nepal’s already fragile infrastructure has suffered a major blow. Hydropower and other electrical facilities representing approximately 430 megawatts of generating capacity have reportedly been damaged, further complicating rescue and relief efforts. Roads and bridges have been washed away, leaving some communities difficult or impossible to reach by conventional means.

Dooley Intermed has worked in Nepal for many years. Nepal is not simply a place where we conduct humanitarian missions—it is a country where we have longstanding relationships with physicians, hospitals, healthcare workers, and communities.

Those relationships allow us to respond quickly and, importantly, to direct assistance where it is actually needed.

As conditions become clearer, Dooley Intermed is preparing to provide targeted emergency assistance to affected communities. Immediate needs are expected to include medicines and medical supplies, food, clean water and water-purification supplies, temporary shelter, blankets, clothing and other basic necessities.
